Periodontal disease attacks the supporting structures of teeth. It is a disease is caused by plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on the teeth. These bacteria create toxins that can damage the gums. Gingivitis is a milder and reversible form of periodontal disease that only affects the gums. Gingivitis may lead to more serious, destructive forms of periodontal disease if it is not treated.
Periodontal disease can lead to teeth becoming loose, fall out, or have to be taken out by a dentist.
To maintain excellent periodontal health good home care such as daily flossing and brushing at least twice daily are recommended. It is possible to have periodontal disease and have no warning signs. That is one reason why regular dental checkups and periodontal examinations are very important
Here are a few easy ways to keep you and your mouth healthy:
- Schedule regular visits with your dentist. Regular cleanings and check-ups will help maintain healthy teeth and gums.
- Brush your teeth at least twice a day using a soft-bristled brush. Brushing removes plaque, a film of bacteria that clings to your teeth.
- Floss once a day. Flossing removes plaque and food between your teeth that brushing misses.
